Let me take you back\u2002\u2014 before drones, before \u201corganic\u201d labels, before pest control companies cost a fortune. When people\u2002leaned in to nature, rather than waging war on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of my favorite examples? Barn owl nest boxes in old barns. Plain-smart for sure \u2014 and based on some genuine\u2002farm wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owls: The Original Pest Control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you had a barn with grain in it, you had\u2002mice. Lots of them. But rather than poison and traps, many farmers simply gazed\u2002up to the skies, considering barn owl nest boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barn owls. Silent,\u2002sharp-eyed hunters that could consume more than 1,000 rodents a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers took note of that, valued it, and made room\u2002for them \u2014 literally creating barn owl nest boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constructing the Boxes:\u2002No Frills, Just Function<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I remember going to my uncle\u2019s farm, and\u2002a long way up in the loft I saw a wooden box. Appeared\u2002to be a birdhouse on steroids. He said his\u2002dad made it with some old apple crates. \u201cThe owls earn their keep with barn owl nest boxes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slapped\u2002together from whatever was at hand \u2014 wood, straw, even burlap. The issues of ventilation, drainage and packing were\u2002all addressed. Not for show. For results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These were people who understood the\u2002land, the animals, the birds. They didn\u2019t need blueprints. Just instinct and a hammer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perfect Placement: High, Quiet, Out of the Way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u2002majority of boxes were stored in lofts or rafters. High places \u2014 dark\u2002and safe \u2014 hold an appeal to barn owls. I climbed one to clean it, and the owl wasn\u2019t through nesting yet, so I got a\u2002face full of feathers. I\u2002never forgot that lesson about barn owl nest boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best part? The boxes were subtle. They looked as if\u2002they had been in the barn forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Tradition Worth Passing Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This wasn\u2019t a one-time trend. Farmers passed it down, shared tips and\u2002before long every barn had an owl or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2002didn\u2019t use the term conservation. They simply knew what worked and they\u2002let it ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It Still Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And indeed, there is something of\u2002a comeback in progress. Folks are reintroducing nest boxes to old barns\u2002\u2014 because they work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next time you\u2019re in\u2002one of those old wooden barns, look up. Because you never know when you might see that dusty\u2002little box stuffed up a rafter. And, who knows, maybe\u2002\u2014 just maybe \u2014 you will hear that haunting screech of one of the barn owls settling in at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have room, build\u2002one.
